Rundle Mall – the heart of shopping in the City of Adelaide
Rundle Mall is South Australia’s premier shopping destination with some of our state’s exclusive flagship stores including H&M, Tiffany & Co. and Sephora. Located in the heart of Adelaide between the funky East End and vibrant West End, Rundle Mall is a family friendly hub of activity and excitement year-round.
With over 700 retail outlets, 300 services, 3 department stores, 15 arcades and centres plus restaurants and dining destinations, Rundle Mall has something for everyone. The open air Mall runs between Pulteney Street and King William Street. The buildings on the northern side back on to North Terrace and the southern side is bordered by Grenfell Street.
Throughout the year, Rundle Mall plays host to a series of major events, including Tasting Australia, Adelaide Fringe Festival and Vogue Festival, as well as activations, pop-ups and a diverse range of world-class buskers to enthral the 22 million visitors welcomed to the Mall annually.
The Gawler Place canopy always has something happening, especially on weekends and during the school holidays.
Landmarks
The Mall features award-winning artworks, including the iconic work The Spheres by Bert Flugelman, affectionately known as the ‘Mall’s Balls’, ‘Pigeon’ by Paul Sloan and ‘A Day Out’ by Marguerite Derricourt – the iconic bronze pigs Horatio, Oliver, Truffles and Augusta.
History
Rundle Mall was originally the extension of Rundle Street and in November 1972, then-Premier Don Dunstan announced the closure of part of Rundle Street, awarding Ian Hannaford Architects with the project to remove the road and replace it with paving.
On 1 September 1976, Rundle Mall was officially opened as a car-free shopping strip. Don Dunstan arrived by horse and cart, champagne ran through the fountain and 10,000 people came to celebrate the beginning of a new era in city retail.
