Santos Tour Down Under 2020 – Adelaide, South Australia

Don’t miss the excitement Australia’s greatest cycling race brings to the city of Adelaide and surrounding regional towns during the January school holidays.  Take a look at the stage maps and pick a spot from which to set up, sit down and view the cyclists as they wizz past!

This 11-day event brings UCI WorldTour professional cycling (male) teams to race on the streets of Adelaide and regional South Australia each January. Up for grabs are important UCI points and the Santos Ochre Leader’s Jersey. The event also plays host to a UCI Women’s 2.1-grade event (one level below Women’s World Tour status), which brings some of the world’s best female cyclists to Adelaide.

2020 Stages:

MEN’S STAGES:

Sunday 19 January 2020 |  SCHWALBE CLASSIC: ADELAIDE

  • Start: 6:45pm, Flinders Street, Adelaide
  • Finish: 7:45pm ETA, Flinders Street, Adelaide
  • Distance: 51.0km

The Schwalbe Classic is the traditional curtain-raiser to the Santos Tour Down Under and returns to the heart of Adelaide for the first time in years, with riders to take on a challenging 1.7km circuit through Adelaide’s centre. Starting outside Pilgrim Church on Flinders Street, the peloton turns into King William Street, heads through Victoria Square before turning left into Angas Street, then into Chancery Lane and right into Wakefield Street. A left turn at Pulteney Street then swings the riders back onto Flinders for the long straight to the start/finish line.

Tuesday 21 January 2020 | ZIPTRAK® STAGE 1: TANUNDA-TANUNDA

  • Start: 11am, Murray Street/Barossa Valley Way, Tanunda
  • Finish: 2:45pm ETA, Murray Street/Barossa Valley Way, Tanunda
  • Distance: 150km

The Barossa hosts the start of the Santos Tour Down Under, but this time fans will have the opportunity to see the peloton pass five times throughout the day. Ziptrak® Stage 1 will start and finish in Tanunda, with a large 30km circuit connecting Bethany, Angaston, Penrice and Nuriootpa.

Wednesday 22 January 2020 | NOVATECH STAGE 2: WOODSIDE-STIRLING

  • Start: 11am, Onkaparinga Valley Road, Woodside
  • Finish: 2:23pm ETA, Mount Barker Road, Stirling
  • Distance: 135.8km

The Adelaide Hills are the most frequented region of the Santos Tour Down Under and once again the race will host several passes, the first commencing with Novatech Stage 2 from Woodside to Stirling. The peloton will complete four loops of Woodside and surrounds, including two ascents of Quarry Road for points in Charleston. On the fourth circuit the riders will deviate east towards Oakbank and Balhannah before the very gradual descent towards Mylor via Hahndorf. Here, the peloton will hit the popular ‘hills circuit’ connecting Mylor, Aldgate, Stirling and Heathfield four times before a sprint finish in the main Stirling township.

Thursday 23 January 2020 | SUBARU STAGE 3: UNLEY – PARACOMBE

  • Start: 11am, King William Road, Unley
  • Finish: 2:27pm ETA, Paracombe Road, Paracombe
  • Distance: 131km

Subaru Stage 3 sends the peloton out of Unley into the Adelaide Hills for one of the more complex stages of the Santos Tour Down Under in recent memory. After departing Unley under neutral, the peloton will climb the South Eastern Freeway and exit at Crafers before tackling the previously used route between Piccadilly, Summertown and Uraidla. Working their way back towards Lobethal, the riders will descend Fox Creek Road towards Cudlee Creek, then turn back towards Lobethal, pass through the township’s main street and exit to Gumeracha. Riders will then ride into Cudlee Creek and through Chain of Ponds to reach Inglewood, where they will again take on the circuit linking it to Houghton and Paracombe four times before doubling back towards Cudlee Creek and descending Gorge Road. At Torrens Hill Road, the riders will dig deep for the final climb of the day into Paracombe.

Friday 24 January 2020 | STAGE 4: NORWOOD – MURRAY BRIDGE

  • Start:: 11am, Town Hall, Norwood
  • Finish: 3:08pm ETA, Bridge Street, Murray Bridge
  • Distance: 152.8km

Stage 4 sets out from Norwood under neutral before commencing the popular ascent into the Adelaide Hills via Gorge Road. This stage is straightforward and will suit a sprint finish. After the Gorge Road climb, riders will traverse a lumpy profile to Kersbrook before ascending to Williamstown and veering south to Mount Pleasant. The final 5.4% climb at Mount Torrens is a reasonable 5.4% average, and is the curtain-raiser to a downhill out of the Hills and to the Murray River, where riders hit Mannum before pushing out the final 30km to finish in Murray Bridge.

Saturday 25 January 2020 | 100% STAGE 5: GLENELG – VICTOR HARBOR

  • Start: 10:40am, Colley Terrace, Glenelg
  • Finish: 2:40pm ETA, Esplanade, Victor Harbor
  • Distance: 149.1km

As with the 2019 edition of the race, Stage 5 sets out from Glenelg towards the Fleurieu Peninsula, but this time the peloton will head to Strathalbyn to then deviate south to a finish in Victor Harbor. This stage could suit a breakaway, with a final climb just before the finish a chance to split the peloton before the finish in Victor Harbor.

Sunday 26 January 2020 | BE SAFE BE SEEN STAGE 6: MCLAREN VALE – WILLUNGA HILL

  • Start: 10:40am, Main Road, McLaren Vale
  • Finish: 2:28pm ETA, Brookman Road, Willunga Hill
  • Distance: 151.5km

After the awesome finish to the Tour in 2019, the ‘Queen’ stage retains its race-ending position in 2020. The peloton will take on the traditional route from McLaren Vale to Willunga, Aldinga Beach, and Tatachilla before tackling two climbs – including the finish – of notorious Willunga Hill.

WOMEN’S STAGES:

Thursday 16 January 2020 | ZIPTRAK® STAGE 1: HAHNDORF-MACCLESFIELD

  • Start: 10am, Mt Barker Road, Hahndorf
  • Finish: 1:26pm ETA, Venables Street / Strathalbyn Road, Macclesfield
  • Distance: 116.3km

Hahndorf will host the very beginning of the 11-day festival of cycling that is the Santos Tour Down Under. The peloton will depart under a neutral parade lap before kicking into race-mode with a 116.3km stage which heads south to Echunga and then Macclesfield before completing an out-and-back from Meadows to Kuitpo before heading back to Echunga to complete a final circuit of Macclesfield-Meadows-Echunga. The race finishes with a sprint in the main part of Macclesfield.

Friday 17 January 2020 | NOVATECH STAGE 2: MURRAY BRIDGE-BIRDWOOD

  • Start: 10am, Bridge Street, Murray Bridge
  • Finish: 1:26pm ETA, Torrens Valley Rd, Birdwood
  • Distance: 114.9km

Murray Bridge sees the return of women’s racing for the first time since 2018 as the host town of Novatech Stage 2 of the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under. This stage is full of climbing, heading from the Murray into the Adelaide Hills via Nairne and Balhannah, before taking the road to Birdwood at Mount Torrens. Upon reaching Birdwood, the peloton will head east to Gumeracha and Kersbrook before taking the road less-travelled – Christmas Tree Ridge at Forreston – a debut climb with a maximum 11% grade before the finish back in Birdwood.

Saturday 18 January 2020 | SUBARU STAGE 3: NAIRNE-STIRLING

  • Start: 10am, Old Princes Highway, Nairne at Junction Street
  • Finish: 1:07pm ETA, Mount Barker Road, Stirling
  • Distance: 109.1km

Nairne once again hosts a stage start with the decisive stage of this year’s tour taking the peloton out to Lobethal before looping back towards the tradtional circuit of Stirling, Heathfield, Mylor and Aldgate for the finish.

Sunday 19 January 2020 | SCHWALBE STAGE 4

  • Start: 4:45pm, Flinders Street, Adelaide
  • Finish: 5:45pm ETA, Flinders Street, Adelaide
  • Distance: 42.5km

Stage 4 concludes the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under and returns to the heart of Adelaide for the first time in years, with riders to take on a challenging 1.7km circuit through Adelaide’s centre.
