April School Holidays to Start Early Due to COVID-19
It has just been announced that schools will be closing a week earlier and there will be 4 pupil free days before Easter at all South Australian public schools and preschools. Last day of Term 1 will be Friday 3 April 2020.
The pupil free days will give school staff time to prepare to transition to flexible teaching and learning, ready for Term 2. Schools will remain open in a modified form for families who need it, where parents are going to work.
Parents are asked to speak to your school or preschool if you need OSHC during these pupil free days or vacation care during the school holidays.
Catholic and Independent schools are expected to implement similar arrangements.
Education Minister John Gardner said
“With the increasing number of children absent from our schools, our teachers need this time to prepare for the difficult challenge of meeting the needs of learners who are at home.”
“For those parents and carers who are able to keep their children at home, well supervised and in an environment of learning, we support this.”
Mr Gardner mentioned that the Education Department is providing support for families through the newly launched Our Learning SA website.
This is a resource for families and educators across SA to assist in transitioning to remote learning.
“Our schools, preschools and early childhood services do also need to remain available to support children of families in different circumstances, including people in our communities who cannot do their necessary work from home, along with a number of vulnerable children who need the opportunity to be supported at school.”
The Education Department was also working to develop options for vacation care during the four pupil-free days and school holidays.
