Sea Shepherd Marine Debris Campaign
Join Sea Shepherd Australia’s Marine Debris Campaign this November and help out at three opportunities to clean our beaches and waterways before summer.
Sea Shepherd has three Marine Debris Campaign clean up events over the coming fortnight and the public are encouraged to head down and participate to help keep our beaches, oceans and waterways clean as we head into summer. Its participants’ choice whether to take part in yoga, diving or an above ground event cleaning up a sanctuary or all three.
Beach cleans are a great way for families to volunteer together and to have a discussion as the holiday season approaches about the importance of ‘leaving nothing but footprints’ at the beach.
At each event there will be Sea Shepherd partners speaking about their organisation and participants can find out about other ways to get involved.
Make sure to keep an eye out for dolphins.
What to Bring:

- Be sun smart hat and sun cream
- Bring water in a reusable bottle

Sunday 17 November 2019 | 8:30am – 11:30am | Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, Garden Island
This area, home to the famous Port River dolphins sadly accumulates a lot of debris with almost 1 tonne collected at a clean-up event in March by dozens of volunteers from all walks of life. Aside from the usual masses of plastic food wrappers, cigarette butts, drink bottles and general rubbish, they also found a couch, 15 car tyres, the side of a fridge, a Christmas tree and a couple of used bullets.
Sea Shepherd will be supported at this event by the Dept of Water and Environment who have named the area their November Marine Park of the month. There will be a microplastic survey undertaken. Microplastics are tiny fragments that plastic breaks up into and can be consumed by birds and marine life. The adventure kayaking team will also be out to assist keeping the area clean for the wonderful dolphin population that we are so fortunate to have residing so close to the city.

Friday 22 November 2019 | 4:45pm – 6:15pm | Brighton Jetty
Kick off the weekend with a chance to do good for the oceans and yourself with a beach clean and Yoga and drum circle session. A brief beach clean will be held to start this wonderful evening to be followed by an evening of beach yoga, meditation, and drumming with Breathe in Peace and Adelaide African Beats.

Saturday 23 November 2019 | 9am – 11am | Port Noarlunga
This will be a big day of action with a mega clean at this beautiful beach used by swimmers, snorkellers, surfers and those who just love to stroll. Port Noarlunga has a beautiful stretch of beach, the mouth of the Onkaparinga River, and a reef which is an aquatic reserve.
The Sea Shepherd team will be joined by scuba divers from the Scuba Divers Federation of SA who will clean underwater around the reef and jetty where there is often fishing debris found – this is particularly hazardous to marine life,

About Sea Shepherd Marine Debris Campaign:
Sea Shepherd Australia’s Marine Debris Campaign was launched in 2016. Since then, over 600 beach and waterway clean-ups have been conducted engaging over 25,000 thousand volunteers around the country.
Cleaning our beaches is a vital tool to remove trash form the marine environment. For every big item you remove from the beach — every bottle, every bucket — you prevent that one large item from fragmenting up into potentially thousands of micro plastics that would otherwise pollute the ocean.
It is estimated that every year one million seabirds and 100,000 turtles and marine mammals such as dolphins, whales and seals die due to plastic pollution in the oceans and that there is 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the oceans
