Sensory-Friendly Evening | South Australian Museum | 11 Sep 2026

A relaxed, sensory-friendly evening at the South Australian Museum for visitors of all ages, their families, friends and support workers.

The South Australian Museum is pleased to offer a quieter after-hours opening on Friday 11 September 2026, creating an enjoyable and welcoming experience for all visitors to connect with their collections.

They’ll be turning some sensory elements off and limiting visitor numbers to create a quieter environment. Their sensory backpacks will also be available for loan.

Additionally, there will be relaxed activities on offer. Visitors can create a paper wing hand puppet, take part in The Dating Game to learn about dating techniques for Museum objects, and explore the Discovery Centre.

Entry to the 2026 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition is included for this event.

Everyone is welcome. This is a special event for anyone who would prefer a quieter Museum visit with their friends, families and supporters.

While everyone is always welcome at the Museum, sometimes the crowds and noise make visits harder for neurodivergent visitors and those living with a disability. Some of the screens, lights and sounds around the Museum will be altered for the evening to make it a more sensory friendly experience.

Please note, the Museum Shop and Cafe will not be open for this event.

In March 2018, the Museum was declared an Autism Friendly Venue by Autism SA. You can download the social story for general visits here. You can also download the sensory map here.

Tickets:

This is a ticketed event for people with sensory needs and their accompanying family, friends or support workers.

Make sure to purchase a ticket for all attendees when you book, as numbers are limited to ensure a quiet environment.

Cost: Adults $5; concession, child and companion card holders are free.
