Sensory-Friendly Evening at the South Australian Museum | 27 Mar 2026

A relaxed, sensory-friendly evening at the South Australian Museum for visitors of all ages, their families, friends and support workers.

In the lead up to World Autism Acceptance Month, the South Australian Museum is opening their doors after hours to offer a quieter Museum experience.

They’ll be turning some sensory elements off and limiting visitor numbers to create a quieter environment.

Additionally, there will be relaxed activities on offer, including the option to paint a fossil with Palaeo-artist Riley Foley, talk one-on-one with a Museum Palaeontologist, and explore the Discovery Centre.

Everyone is welcome. This is a special event for anyone who would prefer a quieter Museum visit with their friends, families, and supporters.

While everyone is always welcome at the Museum, sometimes the crowds and noise make visits harder for neurodivergent visitors and those living with a disability. Some of the screens, lights and sounds around the Museum will be altered for the evening to make it a more sensory friendly experience.

Please note, the Museum Shop and Cafe will not be open for this event.

In March 2018, the Museum was declared an Autism Friendly Venue by Autism SA. You can download the social story for general visits here. You can also download the sensory map here.

Tickets:

This is a ticketed event for people with sensory needs and their accompanying family, friends or support workers.

Make sure to purchase a ticket for all attendees when you book, as numbers are limited to ensure a quiet environment.

Cost: Adults $5; concession, child and companion card holders are free.
