Stay at home kids activities – Shadow drawing
by Katrina Gogel
Drawing with light and shadows is such a fun and easy activity for kids.
Get your child to choose some of their favourite toys, or objects from around the home, grab some paper and pencils, and head outside while the sun is shining.
Place your objects in a really sunny spot, and make sure they are casting a shadow onto the paper. Then get tracing!
Master six decided to colour in his drawings once he’d finished, and you could also cut them out.
* Toy animals are perfect for this project, as are wooden blocks that could be used to make a shadow city. We also thought a vase with a flower would make a pretty drawing.
* We used a paper roll, which can be purchased from shops such as Kmart and Ikea. If you don’t have a roll you can line up some A4 paper instead.
* We recommend placing the paper onto a hard outdoor surface, such as a path or driveway (rather than grass).
* Another great idea is to trace people’s shadows using chalk. This would be a fun sibling activity!
