South Australian Wooden Boat Festival 2019
South Australia’s finest wooden boats will again gather at Goolwa on the River Murray over the last weekend in April.
Goolwa is once again hosting the most impressive freshwater wooden boat festival in Australia. Get on board for a fun filled weekend at the 16th South Australian Wooden Boat Festival.
Celebrating South Australia’s rich maritime history and boat builders past and present, wooden craft of all shapes, size and age will gather at the River Port of Goolwa for the South Australian Wooden Boat Festival. The biennial, two day festival has plenty to see and do with an exciting mix of both on water and land based activities.
The Festival extends from Goolwa Wharf Precinct along the Murray River to include Armfield Slip, Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club and Goolwa Aquatic Club. Here you can enjoy more activities and entertainment. There are boats a plenty, on water and land, ranging from canoes and rowing skiffs, to traditional wooden boats large and small. At the Goolwa Wharf Precinct you can enjoy local food, wine and music and it’s great viewing of all on-water activities.
Join in on the Pirate Trail
Families with children have a fun opportunity to explore the Festival and discover the rich culture and history of wooden boats while getting a chance to win a fabulous prize. The Murray River Eco Maze, face painting and other craft activities will also be on offer for the little ones.
The Rough and Ready boat building competition is always a feature. Get creative with the limited building materials and test your boat building skills – will it sink or sail?
Boat parades led by the paddle steamers, sailing races, demonstrations and fireworks launched from Hindmarsh Island Bridge are also must-see spectacles to enjoy.
SteamRanger Heritage Cockle Train
Goolwa is the only place in the Southern Hemisphere where steam boats meet steam train, the SteamRanger Heritage Cockle Train. During the SA Wooden Boat Festival on 27 and 28 April, this iconic train will be running on both days of the event between Goolwa and Victor Harbor. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a fantastic train ride before boarding on of the paddle steamers for a fabulous river cruise.
Play & Learn – Murray River Eco Maze
The South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board is supporting the SA Wooden Boat Festival by sponsoring the Murray River Eco Maze. The maze is an inflatable interactive storytelling theatre where children of all ages can dress up as birds and butterflies, listen to Dreamtime stories and participate in interactive activities learning about the Murray River environment and what life is like along the river. The maze will be situated along the Pirate Trail on the lawns near the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club.
Floatfest is a canoeing/kayaking event held by the Murraylands Regional Tourist Association Inc and Canoe the Coorong. Each year a Floatfest event is held to encourage more people to get out onto the Murray River, learn canoeing skills, safe water practices and have some fun while doing it! During the 2019 SA Wooden Boat Festival you can join the Floatfest crew for the Canoe Come and Try workshops and watch their unofficial Guinness World Record canoe count at 3.30pm on Sunday 28th!
