Spaghetti Island Adelaide – Italian on Gouger Street
Spaghetti Island is a distinctly colourful and happy place where as the name suggests, it’s all about spaghetti. Located right near the Morphett Street end of Gouger Street, you won’t miss the bright yellow facade. Recently launched in February, it is born from great family stock by the same people who brought us Ruby Red Flamingo, L’Italy and Coccobello, so the Italian flavours are familiar. There’s 50 years of experience here and this menu we are told has been designed by their customers over the decades, from the sauces to the spaghetti, which has always been a favourite pasta for customers.
Three different pasta styles are being offered: classic spaghetti, gluten free spaghetti and carb free spaghetti with 10 different sauces including vegetarian.
Like most traditional Italian restaurants around Adelaide there’s complimentary crusty bread with olive oil. When going out as a family, bread is always welcomed.
We cannot go past a Crab Spaghetti so that was first on the list to try. We also had the Marinara, and the Basil Bay (with pesto, green beans and potato – that’s 2 vegetables camouflaged in this one). The pastas are served with three plates on a tower which is not only novel but gives you table space.
While the spaghetti is great, we need to talk about dessert. I’m not one to order Tiramisu usually but it’s actually the only dessert on the menu. It turns out that this Tiramisu is the best Tiramisu we’ve tasted. I would go back there just for the Tiramisu. It’s melt in your mouth smooth, light and fluffy, with just the right amount of coffee flavour and not sickly sweet. It’s the perfect way to finish off the meal and I get why they only have that one option. There’s no need to compete with something that’s so good. It was a winner with both the kids and adults.
Along with the happy vibe there’s also cocktails on the menu for the adults to enjoy with the spaghetti. You can sit inside amongst the holiday palm trees and disco ball or there are tables on the footpath outside as well.
