St Peters Bakehouse
St Peters Bakehouse is an institution in Adelaide’s Eastern suburbs. You don’t have to look very hard to see how well loved it is – there’s constantly a flow of people and usually a line up. As a regular visitor here for as long as I can remember, it’s easy to understand why you’d line up for the goodies here.
You will find a huge selection of baked goods, both savoury and sweet – including pies, pasties, sausage rolls, quiches, cakes, slices, tarts, donuts, as well as baguettes and rolls.
The Jelly Cakes (pictured below with only one left) are a favourite here and if you get there too late in the day you will find them all gone. The sponge is light and fluffy and with the fresh cream filling these are just how you remember them at birthday parties as a kid.
The Chocolate Salted Caramel Tart below is one of my kids’ favourite.
Kitchener Bun lovers won’t be disappointed with this one below filled with fresh cream (not the fake stuff).
We’ve tried Vanilla Slice at many bakeries and this would have to be our favourite. The slices are big so if you’re cutting them up to share, a tip is to turn the slice on its side, and then slice it that way. For years before I learnt this little trick, I tried to slice them from the top and they were sadly turned into a butchered mess.
If you’re after a birthday cake they have many options available including a giant Jelly Cake, Blackforest, sponge and chocolate. We love the look of this macaron topped white chocolate cake below.
They also make banana cake, chocolate cake and carrot & walnut cake in a rectangle log size. We recommend all three of these. Slice them up for recess, morning tea, afternoon tea or dessert. Their family sized apple pies and apricot pies are great too.
Other small cakes we love are their Chocolate Brownies, Chocolate Caramel Slice, Lemon Tart, Apple Turnover, and their Portuguese Custard Tarts are popular too.
When it comes to pies, one of their most popular is the Chunky Beef and Potato – as the name suggests it’s a chunky beef style pie in a rich gravy and it’s topped with mashed potato with bits of bacon on top. They also make a family size one which is perfect for dinner. Their Quiche Lorraine and Vegetarian Quiche are also a good dinner or lunch option, served with a salad or veggies on the side.
They have a range of fresh baguettes with fillings which are a great catering option and you can also choose your own fillings. There’s a large selection of cold drinks plus of course coffees and milkshakes.
Please note that these photos were taken prior to Coronavirus days so tables and chairs are much closer together than they are now. The number of tables available for seating will depend on government restrictions in place and may change at any time. At one time during restrictions all tables indoors were removed to allow enough space for the social distancing of the steady flow of take away customers. There are a few tables along the two verandahs outside for seating. Please be aware that there is no fencing and they are alongside the roads.
