Start at the Gallery: Mix it up

Mad March is only just beginning, and it’s time to mix it up! Get messy, get bold, get experimental with Start at the Gallery. Enjoy kids tours, live performances and hands-on art activities – all inspired by the thick paint, warped forms and lurid colours of acclaimed contemporary painter Ben Quilty. A mixed-up melting pot of art and ideas for the whole family!

Sunday 7 April 2019

Start at the Gallery: Ways of Seeing

There are so many diverse ways to see, to sense, to think and feel and perceive. Art can help us look at the world differently. The Gallery has acquired some exciting new works and wants everyone to help them celebrate new energy and new ideas. Shift your viewpoint, try an unfamiliar approach and tune in with a fresh perspective.

Enjoy live music, hands-on art workshops, storytelling, audio-described and Auslan-interpreted tours as well as mesmerising magic and artful illusion performed by Mickster the Trickster.

ways of seeing

Explore the pretty and the peculiar, the beautiful and the bizarre, the crafty and the just-a-little-bit-creepy! Create a soft sculpture creature, goggle at gaudy and glamorous performance art, and get a shimmering glitter tattoo or two!

Sunday 2 June 2019

Start at the Gallery: Power of Portraits

Get up close and personal exploring fascinating faces and powerful portraits.  Whether captured in paint, pencil, pottery or photography, portraits can carry rich and wonderful stories, unique personalities, complex emotions and vital cultural histories. Learning about each other’s lives can foster connection, understanding and reconciliation.

Sunday 7 July 2019

Start at the Gallery: Memory Montage

Made in a moment, lasting a lifetime if you’re lucky – marvel at the magic and mystery of memory!  Join Start in July as they explore William Kentridge’s exhibition That which we do not remember, in a free family day of fun featuring a diverse program of art making, music, performances and special guided tours.
