START at the Gallery of South Australia 

Enjoy art-making, music, performances and tours on the first Sunday of every month with Start at the Gallery – an exciting introduction to art for children and their families.

START is a FREE family-fun day and includes art activities, tours, live performances and entertainment at the Art Gallery of South Australia on North Terrace.

Each monthly event is themed around current exhibitions or the general collection.  Program details are released closer to the date, so keep an yet of the Art Gallery’s Facebook page or click on their website link below.

Recommended for children aged 3-12 years, parent/carer supervision is required.  Events are free and no bookings are necessary.

On Your Visit:

  • Check in when you arrive by using your Start Art Club Membership.
  • Book into activities on arrival.
  • They’ve added extra tours but numbers and capacity restrictions apply. Arrive early to avoid disappointment.
  • Remember to social distance, wash your hands, and use hand sanitiser frequently. AGSA has increased cleaning on the premises.
  • If you’re not well or experiencing flu-like symptoms, please join them online instead of at the Gallery.

Start at the Gallery: Collection Connection

Connect with your art collection and find your favourite work of art on a discovery tour, take a drawing journey through the collection, explore colour with choreography; and encounter spectacular sounds, storytelling and Pico’s Puppet Palace performances this Start.

  • Start at the Gallery: Sensory Scenes

Look through a different lens and have fun with texture, colour, light and shape to see what you can create at Start! Explore, draw and sculpt suburban scenes; meditate, move or dance your way through the Gallery; and encounter spectacular sounds, storytelling and performances this Start.

  • Start at the Gallery: Shifts in Time

Move your clocks back to look, listen, draw, dance and discover how artists depict time this Start. Play with texture, colour, light and shape in art workshops with Studio artist Carly Snoswell, let your soul speak with rainbow meditation and colourful choreography, and enjoy the present moment with soulful sounds from DJ Ruby Chew and silent disco Guru Dudu.

  • Start at the Gallery: Music & Movement

Connect with the present moment through mindfulness, movement and music. Swing and sing with pop up performances by Young Adelaide Voices Collective, enjoy timeless tunes from Grandad’s Gramophone played by DJs Coops & Splendid and explore notions of emotions in art.

  • Start at the Gallery: Modern Masterpieces

Explore the ideas behind the artists of their time in the 2021 Ramsay Art Prize exhibition. Discover, dance and draw on tours; enjoy the sensational sounds of the Immanuel College String Orchestra; hear timeless tales of epic adventures in Pico’s Puppet Palace and storytelling performances. Don’t forget to create your own masterpiece in art workshops to submit for the 2021 Start Art Prize exhibition this Start!  Book into activities on arrival. Registrations open at 10.30am.
