How to Support our Bushfire-Affected Wineries around Adelaide

In the wake the devastating Cudlee Creek bushfire on Friday 20 December 2019, South Australians have opened their hearts and their wallets to help the Adelaide Hills communities affected by the devastating blaze.  The State Emergency Relief Fund has collected $1.28 million in donations in the first week, after the State Government offered 1 million dollars to kick off the fundraiser, with the government-run initiative expected to continue to grow over the coming days.

There are many ways we can all help – big or small, it all makes a difference (READ MORE HERE ON OTHER WAYS TO HELP).

There are around 20 bushfire-affected wineries, some much worse than others, who suffered significant losses and who now need our support.  Many of the small family run businesses have shared their stories on social media and below are the details on how you can support them.

At a time when Christmas and New Year celebrations are in full swing, supporting these businesses will help in getting them back on their feet.  By buying wine direct from the winemaker they avoid paying sales commissions.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your notes of concern regarding the Cudlee Creek bushfire that devastated many communities of the Adelaide Hills on Friday. We have now assessed the damage, which is significant and sadly will require a long-term replanting plan. These photos show the extent of the fire across our Lenswood vineyard. Riesling, chardonnay, grüner veltliner, pinot noir, merlot, cabernet, sauvignon blanc, gewürztraminer all lost. Sadly this includes some of the oldest pinot noir in the Adelaide Hills, planted by Tim Knappstein in 1983. Both of our sheds, machinery and equipment lost as well. Thank you to the CFS for their efforts in the worst conditions on Friday. Our thoughts are with our neighbours and friends, and the rest of the Adelaide Hills wine community who have been impacted as well. Stephen and Prue Henschke and family.

The support we have received the past couple of days is heartwarming, we thank you all for these kind thoughts and messages. At this stage we have not fully assessed the damage, we do know that our sheds, some equipment and the fruit from this year has taken a big hit but most importantly our cellar door and winery staff are safe and we should be able to recover our vineyards for future vintages. Today our team are out clearing the land and watering down the trees to ensure there are no further fires. We wish to give our sincerest thanks to the CFS who have worked tirelessly to save our property (as shown in the second image) without them the damage would have been much more severe and we cannot thank them enough. Please donate to the CFS via the link in our bio. The Petaluma cellar door will likely open on the 27th December from 11am, please however take note of local warnings and be prepared for some difficult sights in the region. Our thoughts are with the local community, farmers and families during this time. @adelaidehillswine #adelaidehillswine @sa_countryfireservice #sacfs #sacountryfireservice
