Tasting Australia TOWN SQUARE 2022 REVIEW

We couldn’t wait to visit the Town Square, hub of Tasting Australia at Tarntanyangga/Victoria Square. The set up is the same as previous years with the large clear roof pavilion sheltering tables in the centre, as well as more tables and seating along both sides of the Square. Below are pictures from our visit on Saturday 30 April 2022.

The water fountains are on in front of the pavilion so if you think your kids won’t be able to resist getting wet, take along a change of clothes and a towel.

Some of the foods we saw or tried: Chilli Crab, Loaded Fries with Satay Chicken, Prawn Dumplings, Margherita Pizza, Beef Brisket Burger, curries, and loads of different smoking meat.

Just a note about meat. There are several food vendors who cook their meat in full view, slow cooking and smoking. Large pieces of meat may be cooking at any one time from raw to cooked. This may be confronting for those not accustomed to seeing meat like this and especially for vegetarians. The smell of the smoking meat fills the air – be aware that you may leave with a smokey smell in your hair and clothes.

For dessert, which is an important part, crowd favourite Shibui is back again. This time they have introduced a Vegemite flavoured soft serve ice cream and created a Vegemite “on Toast” dessert which is made of brown butter panko crumble. Sorry, our kids were not keen enough on Vegemite to try this, preferring to stick to the chocolate lava cake with Raspberry Candy ice cream and just Chocolate ice cream in a cone.

Joining Shibui in the dessert department is Lukoumades with their delicious little donuts.

The cocktail bar and other wine bars have plenty of alcoholic options. The one thing our kids would have liked, and would be fitting to accompany the food here, is perhaps a bubble tea stall and also maybe a smoothie stall. Apart from the usual basic soft drinks in cans, there are not many other non-alcoholic options. The coffee stall doesn’t have Hot Chocolate or an Iced Chocolate either.
