Giant Father Christmas returns to the Adelaide Central Market.
The Market Tower on Grote Street in Adelaide is the proud home to Australia’s largest Father Christmas.
Adelaide’s iconic giant Father Christmas is back for the 2024 festive season at the Adelaide Central Market, going up one week before the National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant in the city. The giant Santa previously graced the David Jones building in Rundle Mall each year, (and previously the old John Martins store) and is back at the Adelaide Central Market after being given a new lease of life back in 2022.
Adelaide’s smiling, waving 16 metre giant jolly Father Christmas was built in the 1960’s, but not much else is known about its origins. Constructed of fibreglass with a steel structure, the Adelaide City Council retired him in 2018 due to the ongoing cost of repairs, storage and maintenance. Thanks to media personality Cosi, the South Australian community and businesses who contributed to the fundraising efforts, our state’s giant Father Christmas statue was lovingly repaired and restored so it could once again be put back on display each Christmas season.
We are excited to have Adelaide’s Giant Santa back on display for everyone to see as they drive through the city. Local residents and visitors to Adelaide love to see him as they travel along Grote Street, or when shopping at the Adelaide Central Market.
