The Hot Pot Guy | Family Friendly Dining with a Playground in Adelaide | Review

The Hot Pot Guy is a fun, kid friendly option for a family dinner in the Adelaide CBD with a bonus indoor playground to keep the kids entertained.

There are plenty of large tables and booths, most with a huge recessed hot pot in the centre of the table, ready for you to cook your food to your liking. There are options for individual hot pots, but these sit on top of the table.

If you aren’t familiar with hot pot (also known as steamboat) it’s a traditional Asian meal where a family share a communal simmering large pot of soup at the table, where meat, seafood and vegetables are added to cook. It’s a really fun way to eat that kids usually love.

How does hot pot work?

Select your soup base first – there are many options to choose from, including plenty to suit kids’ palates. We would usually choose the chicken broth. The helpful staff will guide you with your selection, then bring out a large pot to start simmering away. The design of the recessed hot pots is very child friendly – it’s very hard for kids to access the simmering liquid, and the metal edges of the pot don’t get hot, making this a safe and fun setup.

You then select your ingredients to cook in your pot. You have a huge range to choose from here, from seafood to meats, dumplings, noodles, and lots of fresh vegetables. Ingredients come out on plates, and all tables have a shelf unit next to the table so you have room to spread out. You can then cook your ingredients at your own pace. Kids love dropping food into the simmering pot themselves, and ladling ingredients out into their own personal bowls.

With so many ingredients to choose from, it can get a little pricey. We suggest pacing yourself and ordering conservatively – the serves are generous, and you can always order more if you’re still hungry. The soup base pots are huge, there will be plenty of soup for a family of any size.

There’s also a wide selection of drinks and sides, and some well-priced desserts. The restaurant staple of Deep Fried Ice Cream was a favourite for us, and the Mango Pomelo Sago was a hit as well.

The Playground at The Hot Pot Guy

The newest feature of the restaurant is the fantastic indoor play space for kids. It’s a bright, clean space that packs a lot in to keep kids entertained. There is a large ball pit, trampoline, ladder, bridge and twisty slide. There are giant balls and soft batons to play with, and even a velcro wall behind the trampoline with velcro suits to put on and jump to stick yourself to the wall (we were unable to try these as they only suit smaller kids, but they look like lots of fun)!

There is also a TV in the playroom showing cartoons. Children do need to be supervised in here, and there are seats for parents. The venue asks that shoes are removed and socks must be worn. The playroom sits at the back of the restaurant in a separate room with a child gate.

Where is The Hot Pot Guy?

Situated on Gouger Street, just west of Morphett Street, this large restaurant is at the quieter end of Gouger Street’s restaurant strip, with some street parking available nearby.

The restaurant is open for dinner from 5:30pm, 7 days a week. It can get quite busy, especially on weekends. We suggest you book ahead where possible.
