The I Hate Children Children’s Show: Adelaide Fringe 2023 Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars for an extremely funny, engaging magic show for all ages!
The I Hate Children Children’s Show is a fantastic show for sadistic parents. Wait, what? Yes! The show will also appeal to kids who love participating onstage, who love magic and who can have a good laugh at themselves.
The talented, incredibly witty and likeable (even if he says he’s mean) Paul Dabek has made his return to Adelaide to deliver the I Hate Children Children’s Show where young children are invited onto the stage to partake in Dabek’s magic tricks while he pokes fun at them. Sounds mean? It kind of is but it’s a laugh-a-minute with Dabek who never misses a beat! His very quick sleight-of-hand and super quick wit produce a show that entertains everyone from 4-year-olds to adults and even….. teens! Yes, even the teens could not suppress the fact that they were more than a little amused!
At the beginning of the show, Dabek promises to be 20% meaner to the children of Adelaide, however, everyone manages to leave the show without looking like they’re going to be needing to spend their life savings on therapy. In fact, even the little kids manage to have a little chuckle at themselves. Let’s face it, being able to have a little laugh at yourself should be classed as an essential life skill!
Perhaps the meanest act Dabek delivers is the “magic bag of disappointment” (I’m still singing the song in my head!) that delivers broken dreams and broken balloons to small children as they leave the stage. My recommendation – if they’re still sad, buy them a drink (non-alcoholic) and take them for a round of mini golf after the show ($5 per person, located adjacent the tent).
Not only is Dabek a true showman, with impeccable comedic timing, but he manages to take the whole “working with children” gig in his stride. He makes every attempt to provide a stage opportunity for all the kids who volunteer to be “stars of the show” and and to ensure that they’re safe on stage. He also seems to be able to read kids well and doesn’t take jokes too far at their expense. Also, kids who don’t want to participate won’t be forced to participate. Adults, however, should sink down into their seats if they don’t want to be targeted! From the moment Dabek starts the show by inviting “all the tipsy mums” to sit at the front to watch their own children being used as fodder to make people laugh, you know you’re in trouble. To the dad who ended up in the naughty corner for time-out during the show, next time, don’t sit near the front!
So, if you’re looking to develop your child’s humour and personal resilience and enjoy a good laugh at your children onstage, this is the show to go and see!
