The Life. Unley’s Own, Returning Home Exhibition – City of Unley and Flinders University
An exhibition exploring the lives and experiences of returned South Australian soldiers is now on display at Unley Museum.
The Life. Unley’s Own, Returning Home exhibition marks 100 years since soldiers who served on the frontline in WWI were returning home to resume their lives.
In partnership between the City of Unley and Flinders University, research student Sandra Kearney was able to explore the lives of 100 men, including many from the 1,189 soldiers from Unley who enlisted in the 27th Infantry Battalion known as ‘Unley’s Own’.
The stories of 15 men, and the lives they led after the war, are being shared as part of the exhibition. Ms Kearney said her experience during the research process was poignant.
“Meeting family members to chat about these men was a heartfelt experience,” Ms Kearney said.
“I was moved by each soldier as I came to know their personalities, lives and the challenges they faced through the stories shared by their families.”
The exhibition aims to highlight the strength and integrity of each soldier, with their personal story offering deep insight into how the experience is weaved into their family history.
Unley Museum Curator Karen Paris said the Museum was proud to present this important exhibition.
“It recognises that these men were not only soldiers but people with lives and families and it explores the vital support networks these men had and the importance of a close-knit community,” Ms Paris said.
Life. Unley’s Own, Returning Home will be on display at the Unley Museum, 80 Edmund Ave Unley, until Thursday, 3 October 2019.
The museum is open Monday to Wednesday 10am to 4pm, Thursday 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 2pm to 5pm. It is closed on Public Holidays. Admission is free.
