Father Christmas returns to the Magic Cave in 2020 – David Jones, Rundle Mall Adelaide

A visit to the Magic Cave is a family tradition for many South Australians each year.  Once you travel to the 2nd floor of the Rundle Mall David Jones store, children can follow the footsteps to the Magic Cave where Father Christmas will be waiting.

**Update 8 December 2020:

Just a note to let you know that Father Christmas visits at the Magic Cave at David Jones are all booked out. Unfortunately with restrictions in place, only people with bookings are able to visit the Cave, including the Christmas windows and carousel ride. None of the Magic Cave pictured below is open for casual visits without a prior booking.
There are still spots available at Myer Santaland though – get details and book soon to avoid disappointment:

Until Christmas Eve, families can visit Father Christmas in a safe and interactive environment in the Magic Cave, plus stop by the Grand Piano for some enchanting Christmas tunes.  David Jones has a number of measures in place to ensure the safe enjoyment of the holiday season for all, allowing customers to meet Father Christmas both in-store and virtually with the introduction of the David Jones North Pole Hotline.

Photos with Father Christmas at the Magic Cave

The permit application for Father Christmas to move around in all states in Australia has been approved and he will be appearing with his trusty elves in the David Jones Magic Cave for a meet and greet and a photo.

All Christmas photography at David Jones this year will be socially distanced with the use of props and backdrops, and managed in line with current government health and safety advice with the onsite assistance of David Jones Social Distancing Elves.

How Visits with Father Christmas at the Magic Cave will work

As with most events, a visit to the Magic Cave is a bit different this year. See below for our first look at the Magic Cave, and see our notes for things you need to know about a visit with Father Christmas here this year.

What’s there this year, and what has changed:

?? The Christmas window displays with moving characters are still there.

?? The free carousel is there.

?? The funny mirrors are there.

?? Nipper and Nimble are not there this year. If you’ve visited in previous years, the spot where Nipper and Nimble were placed, is actually where Father Christmas is this year for photos.

?? Father Christmas will be standing and there are a couple of seats placed a COVID-safe 1.5 metres away, so your visit will be physically distanced. There will be no sitting on his lap or physical contact. Father Christmas will not be in his usual little ‘cave’ as in previous years, as the small space would not allow for physical distancing.

?? The area will be cleaned in between each session.

?? Unlike previous years, you cannot drop by and ride the free carousel at any time.

?? Your visit with Father Christmas in that one room must be pre-booked, either online (which we would recommend) or book at the entrance. Please note that Father Christmas will not have extra ”helpers” as he sometimes has – it’s just him in this one room. With these changed circumstances, there will be less visits available to book, so it would be a good idea to book online soon if you don’t want to miss out.

You can pre-book your visit with Father Christmas via the David Jones website here.
