Discover The Stage Shop on Sir Donald Bradman Drive in Adelaide.

Magical, ethereal, beautiful and inspiring… these are the words that will come to mind as you walk through the doors of The Stage Shop.

Review by Jo Parkinson

So much more than your typical dancewear store, this place is more of an experience as you find the perfect product, whilst being surrounded by the most exquisite décor you’ve ever seen. If you have a young dancer at home, a visit here will make them feel like they have stepped into a dream!

History and a New Beginning

For over 70 years, The Stage Shop has been providing Adelaide performers with everything they need for class and the stage. It began in the 1950’s with a small store in Leigh Street in the heart of the CBD. With its iconic red neon sign, people in the industry will have fond memories of the excitement of going to the original store.

When the store moved to 56 Sir Donald Bradman Drive it took on a new lease of life.  It has more than doubled in size and now stocks a bigger than ever range of dancewear and performance products. It has also been styled immaculately and is such a treat for the eyes every time you visit. As a reminder of the past, the original red neon sign still hangs in the entrance.

Products

This place specialises in dancewear, and the interior is truly inspiring for any dancer, young or old. The Stage Shop stocks a huge range of leotards in every colour you can think of, gorgeous tutus, shoes of every style, practice attire and all the accessories you could ever need.

From hair products, make up, costuming, and jewelery, the friendly assistants can advise customers on which product will suit them best. This place is a must for any ballerina needing their first pair of pointe shoes, as there is a special area set up just for fittings, complete with ballet barre and mirror!

The Stage Shop also sells stunning special occasion dresses and a lovely range of giftware, partyware, trinkets and beauty products. It’s certainly hard not to overspend when visiting, there are so many gorgeous products to choose from!

School Holiday Programs

During the school holidays, The Stage Shop often run programs for children. In the July 2024 holidays, the sessions on offer were Pointe Shoe Decorating Workshop or Wand Decorating. We went along to the Pointe Shoe Decorating and our 8-year-old loved every minute! Sessions run for around 30-45 mins and are suitable from age 4+. They are catered for in small groups, so booking and paying ahead is highly recommended.

On arrival, our girl picked out a pointe shoe to decorate and then took a seat at the beautifully set-up crafting table. Then came the best part- picking out all the sparkles, sequins, gems and ribbons you can imagine. As a dancer and a fan of arts and crafts, these was her two favourite things combined!

She was then able to glue and decorate as much as she liked. With the help of a staff member hot glueing the finishing touches on, her pointe shoe was then presented to her in a special bag to take home and display.

We love that the store also sells take home kits, for pointe shoe decorating and wand making, in case you wanted to do more or would make the perfect gift for a young dancer.

Keep an eye on The Stage Shop website or follow their Instagram page for more exciting workshops that may be offered in the future.
