Weet-Bix Messy Kids Photo Competition | Q&A with Comedian Em Rusciano

Comedian Em Rusciano works with Weet-Bix to find Australia’s funniest Messy Kids photo.

Weet-Bix recently announced that they they are working with comedian Em Rusciano to find Australia’s funniest messy kids photo. In honour of all the millions of kids who have eaten, crunched and slurped their way through bowls of wholegrain goodness, and for all the parents who’ve had to clean it up.

Comedian, writer, singer, presenter and (sometimes frazzled) mum of two, Em Rusciano has endearingly gained a wide following due to her brutally frank, funny and honest accounts of parenting, writing about everything from dirty laundry to boring play dates and teary school days. On working with Weet-Bix Em says “I’ve been feeding my kids Weet-Bix for years, there’s been a pack in the pantry my entire life… even now I whip it out for emergency dinners. Just add warm milk, BOOM hot meal! And of course in the past Weet-Bix have worked with elite athletes so it’s only a natural progression that they’d want to work with me. I’m looking forward to find Australia’s most disgusting tiny eater. Let the messy kids come at me!”

Em gave Play & Go some of her time to answer a few questions we had for one of our favourite celebrity Mums.

Play & Go features loads of activities for families to do, in particular we love seeing families get outside and play in nature… what is your favourite outdoor activity to do with the kids in summer?

We’re a very outdoorsy family, which is for the best as we are also a very LOUD family. We’re lucky enough to live right near the Yarra river in the hills of Melbourne so we often head down there for a spot of swimming, frog catching and rope swinging. My husband is a keen surfer so we’re often on a beach somewhere pretending to watch him surf!

You have 157,000+ followers on Facebook and heaps more on Twitter and Instagram. What advice do you have for kids, and parents about the good and the bad sides of the internet?

A friend of mine is a policewoman and she said that if you let your kid go into their bedroom with a device connected to the internet, you’re basically inviting strangers into their bedroom. That completely freaked me out as you can well imagine. The rules here are, I have all the passwords and I am “friends” with or follow my 14 year old on all her social media platforms. She plugs her phone in to charge for the night in the kitchen and doesn’t take it in with her into her bedroom. However I’m realistic, I can’t watch her all the time, so I’m doing my best to help her gain the skills she needs to deal with creepy and or mean people she may come across online. We also have the “don’t post anything you wouldn’t say to someone’s face” rule.

What has being a mum taught you about mess?

That sometimes you just have to yield to the mess, you have to give in and let it happen.

Everyone has a pet hate when it comes to mess, for some it’s sand, others a crocked picture frame. What’s the one thing that pushes your buttons?

WET FREAKING TOWELS ON THE FLOOR! My children cannot help themselves… it drives me crazy.

What’s the messiest thing you’ve ever done with your kids?

When we cook it usually looks like a tsumani has blown through our kitchen. We’re very messy chefs, nothing gets put back at the time of use, which I know is what should happen!

Weetbix is a staple in family homes across Australia. They can be served up as breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack or midnight feast, used as ‘breadcrumbs’, made into cookies, muffins and have many more genius uses beyond our imaginations. How does your family ‘do’ weetbix? Are you traditional ‘milk and sugar’ folk or do you get more creative?

We all do honey with bananas on top, so I guess kind of traditional with a little flair. It’s pretty great.
