Adelaide’s West End Brewery Christmas Riverbank Display
Each year a magical display of lights and Christmas scenes are set up along the lawns of the South Australian Brewing Company in Thebarton, just opposite the Entertainment Centre.
2019 marks the 60th anniversary of the West End Brewery Christmas Riverbank Display. Beginning as a clean-up project for the staff at the brewery back in 1959, members of the operations team decided to enhance the gardens with some festive cheer, starting with Santa and his sleigh.
Over the years the display has evolved and this free community event is open annually for all families in South Australia as a gift from West End Brewery.
The 2019 Christmas Riverbank Display will open daily from 4pm till 12 midnight from Monday 25 November up to and including Tuesday 31 December 2019. The display can be enjoyed night or day, with the lights turning on at dusk each evening.
In what is now an iconic South Australian tradition, each year thousands of people view the displays along the banks of the River Torrens. As well as the riverbank displays there are a variety of stands selling food and drinks, plus each year there are a few carnival amusements for kids such as a merry-go-round and laughing clowns.
As dusk falls and the lights are turned on, each Riverbank display is transformed and shines with a delightful glow.
Scenes include the Nativity Inn and Water Wheel, a Ferris Wheel, Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, the Red Brewery Truck, Vulcan’s Volcano and Moby Dick – who swims along the Torrens towards the Port Road Bridge.
Transport & Parking
Parking is available at the Entertainment Centre (2 hour free parking from 6pm if there are no events on), or take advantage of the free tram that runs from South Terrace, through the city, along North Terrace and stopping at the Entertainment Centre on Port Road.
Play & Go tips for enjoying the West End Brewery Riverbank Christmas Lights
If you haven’t been here before be aware it can get extremely busy as the sun sets and spectators cram for space along the path, stopping frequently to take a look down over the fence.
Prams tend to battle for space and the lines of people move very slowly, so keep this in mind and avoid taking a pram if at all possible.
It is much quieter during the day and young children will still enjoy the sights without the lights on, so this may be a option for families with very young children who struggle to stay up late.
There is usually 2 single portable toilets and 1 disabled toilet on site, as well as appropriate fencing around the area.
