Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility
The new Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility is South Australia’s only international-standard BMX track. It is part of a major sports precinct in the south, including a new $7 million southern soccer facility, and will be a new home for an estimated 900 soccer players and BMX riders. The facility officially opened in January 2022 with the Summer Showdown 2022 AusCycling BMX National Rounds.
Named after South Australian BMX star Willoughby, who represented Australia at the 2012 (silver medal winner) and 2016 Olympic Games, the new track is equipped to host large scale competitions such as state championships and BMX Super-cross World Cups.
The new facility will be home to The Cove BMX and Happy Valley BMX Clubs whilst becoming a facility for elite riders. There will also be a brand new soccer facility, including three floodlit turf pitches, clubrooms with a kitchen, bar, and car parking.
The new facility will also contain:
- Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) track with 5 metre and 8 metre start hills
- Clubroom and associated car parking
Willoughby, who suffered a career-ending injury in 2016, has been involved in the design process of the track itself.
“This is going to be one of the greatest BMX facilities in the world,” Willoughby said.
The facility has its own car park and is located on Majors Road, O’Halloran Hill opposite the Fire Station and adjacent to the MTB Trails car park.

Second BMX Track – Major’s Road Pump Track
A second BMX track has been constructed alongside the Sam Willoughby International facility, with the Marion Council building a pump track for use by novice BMX riders and the wider community. It officially opened in May 2023.
A pump track circuit is typically smaller than a regular BMX track. It features a circuit designed to be ridden completely by ‘pumping’, generating momentum by up and down body movements instead of pedalling. A pump track can be ridden by first-time riders and kids while providing a challenge to more experienced riders.
