Adelaide Gaol’s annual History Day is back during South Australia’s History Festival in May.
As part of South Australia’s History Festival Adelaide Gaol will be creaking open its doors to areas usually closed to visitors.
Intrigued? Here’s what’s in store:
Step inside the gaol’s kitchen and laundry, and get a rare glimpse into the daily lives of those who lived and worked within these walls. These areas are typically closed to visitors so don’t miss you chance to peek inside.
The gaol will also be unveiling an exclusive Archive Exhibition for the very first time. Delve into a treasure trove of items that have laid hidden within the archive room, including guard uniforms, a hunger strike archive book and old photos.
And they haven’t forgotten about their younger visitors. Kids can revel in a variety of lawn games and specially designed activities, ensuring a fun and engaging day out for the entire family.
TICKETS:
You can visit Adelaide Gaol for less than half price – discounted entry will be on offer for just $5.90 per person (free for kids aged 0-3).
Please note on-site parking is limited (two tram stops are conveniently located nearby for easy access via public transport) and online booking is essential.

About the Adelaide Gaol
Built in 1841, Adelaide Gaol is one of the state’s two oldest public buildings, a title it shares with Government House (1839) on North Terrace. The gaol finally closed its doors in 1988 when the last inmates were transferred to other institutions.
It had operated for 147 years, hosting more than 300,000 prisoners – and executing 45 of them.
Now the gaol is one of Adelaide’s most popular heritage attractions, with self-guided tours available seven days a week, as well as guided historical tours for groups and schools, and ghost tours.
