Roseworthy Railway Club | Review

Ride the miniature railway at Roseworthy Railway Club.
Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji
If you have a young (or young at heart train enthusiast) you simply must mark your calendar and visit the Roseworthy Railway Club for one of their public sessions. Housed at the Roseworthy Railway Club on the Roseworthy campus as part of the Adelaide University, the club is a not for profit for model railway engineering. Public sessions are held monthly on either a Saturday or Sunday, depending on the month. The best way to keep up to date with upcoming events is through the club’s Facebook page.

We visited on a sunny Sunday afternoon in September with a bunch of kids aged between six and eight, and we all couldn’t get enough. When we pulled into the car park, we could barely find a spot, this place is so popular! As soon as we arrived, we turned right and bought our tickets for the train rides. At the time of our visit, single ride tickets were $3, or you could buy a pack of 11 rides for $30. Both options required cash (as at September 2026).

We then joined the queue and waited for the next miniature train. There were at least half a dozen trains running when we visited, and we opted to try two different ones. The track runs for 1.2 km and winds through bushland, making for a lovely little trip around the area. There’s no minimum age, and we saw everyone from toddlers to adults giving it a go.

As well as the miniature train rides, there’s a small canteen selling cold drinks, ice blocks, and a limited range of sweet and savoury snacks, such as lollies and chips. There are also toilets, a few places to sit, and a small shaded area. The club holds monthly public runs and can also cater for private birthday parties, which we all agreed would be a fun way to ride the railway as many times as you like!

We loved this activity and highly recommend it to train enthusiasts and families looking for a unique, low-cost activity in Adelaide’s north.

What we liked about it:
- being outside, feeling with wind through our hair and looking at the scenery as we rode the miniature train.
- Enjoying an ice block on a hot day after the ride.
- Being around miniature trains.
Things to consider:
- Closed-toe shoes must be worn.
- Don’t forget to slip, slop, slap, as it can get quite warm and sunny.
- Remember to take along cash.
- Arrive early if you can, as it can get busy in the afternoon.
- Events are automatically cancelled if the forecast is over 35°C or on total fire ban days.
Our favourite nearby coffee spots/cafes:
- Cafe Sia at Gawler
Location:
University of Adelaide, Mudla Wirra Road, Roseworthy
