Armistace Day Service at West Terrace Cemetery
South Australian families are invited to commemorate 100 years of remembrance at Australia’s oldest dedicated military burial ground on Sunday 11 November 2018.
At the going down of the sun, from 6.45pm to 8pm, West Terrace Cemetery will hold an Armistice Day service to pay tribute to our past and present war heroes.
Families, friends and young children are invited to attend this special event. Light refreshments including tea, coffee and ice cream, will be available prior to the service from 5.30pm.
Armistice Day – also known as Remembrance Day – holds great significance in 2018. It marks 100 years since the signing of the Armistice, which led to the end of the First World War. This year’s commemorative event will feature a dramatic presentation providing a glimpse back in time, from the Declaration of War to the conflict on Flanders Fields and an Ode for the Fallen. The men and women who have served in past conflicts, and those still serving today, will also be honoured.
All activities will take place under the Cross of Sacrifice and amongst 4,000 military headstones within the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) section of West Terrace Cemetery. The cemetery’s AIF section is Australia’s first and oldest dedicated military burial ground.
Official guests from State Government, ex-service personnel, veterans’ groups and community organisations have been invited to attend to pay their respects and place tributes.
Members of the public are also invited to place a tribute. Families and children wanting to do so are asked to contact events@aca.sa.gov.au by Friday 2 November 2018.
Seating will be provided. Families are also welcome to bring along their own picnic rugs.
West Terrace Cemetery is the State’s oldest working cemetery, and one of Australia’s oldest operating capital city cemeteries. Steeped in history, the State Heritage Listed cemetery has been operating for over 180 years.
