St Raphael’s School is a place to LEARN and BELONG.
We want the children in our care, to be the very best that they can be. When our students leave us to take the next step in their education, we want them to be confident, kind, happy individuals.
LEARN
Students learn differently, have different speeds of comprehension, differing personal abilities and varying inherent strengths. St Raphael’s School use the Australian Curriculum, the Catholic Education South Australia Crossways Religious Education Curriculum as well as the Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum as the basis for all of their learning design. Areas include: Religious Education, Mathematics, English, Science, HASS (History and Social Studies), Design and Technology, Health and Physical Education, The Arts, Languages (Japanese), with Digital Technologies embedded into all their learning areas.
They also provide a school counsellor, Pastoral Associate, multi-sensory literacy program with MiniLit and MacqLit, a numeracy program, EALD support teacher and a dedicated Sensory Suite on school grounds. The school offers flexible learning environments for their students and believe they learn best when they can articulate, reflect on, and have agency in their learning. Teaching is framed by their Learner Dispositions of being Curious, Resilient, Thoughtful, Responsible and Collaborative in conjunction with the School Values being Compassionate, Respectful and Just.
We want our learners to know how to take charge of their own learning and to ‘know what to do when they do not know what to do’.
BELONG
All children need to feel that their world is a safe place. Students want to be surrounded by people who care about them, where they are supported, respected and aided, and where they are able to form meaningful connections. When these needs are met, children develop a sense of belonging and are happier and want to come to school.
One example of how a sense of belonging is created at St Raphael’s School is through their school camps, excursions and incursions. These opportunities extend the learning environment, support student outcomes and create fabulous lifelong memories. Direct benefits to students include: increased interest in physical activity and recreational pursuits, improved motor skills, self-esteem, self-worth and confidence, opportunity for personal challenge and achievement, increased sense of community and bonding with peers and teachers, improved teamwork and communication skills and opportunity to spend time in the natural environment.
