Boss Squad at the Adelaide Fringe – Review

★★★★ 4 Stars for female strength and empowerment

Five fearless female performers and a repertoire of circus skills including acrobatics, gymnastics, juggling, skipping, dancing and much more in the intimate setting of Ukiyo in Gluttony.

Their goal is to “smash stereotypes while smashing out tricks” and their girl-power message is strong!  From their opening act of bouncing each other into the air to watching one of the performers peel and eat an onion (raw!!) this show is varied and fast paced.   There are a few near misses here and there, proving the girls are human after all, but they take it all in their stride and with good natured humour.

The show sends out a message of equality and there is probably nothing these girls can’t do, or at the very least they would give it a go.  Standing on each others shoulders, flying over each other through a hoop and performing stunts on a German wheel, trust is put to the test with endless balancing acts throughout the 60 minute show.

The girls are all very talented and compliment each other beautifully, each with their own skill set and personalities on show.  Highlights include the action filled skipping demonstration and the hula-hoop spectacular in tune to ‘Shout out to my Ex” by Little Mix.  A point to note for younger viewers – some of the background soundtracks contains expletives, there’s a little chat about periods and there are a couple of sexual references, as mentioned in the show’s content warnings.

Boss Squad is a collaboration between Point & Flex Circus (originating from Adelaide) and Madhouse Circus.
