Bowker Oval Playground | North Brighton

Bowker Oval Playground in North Brighton – Review

By Claire Davill

Tucked away in the backstreets of North Brighton, this newly-installed playground has plenty to keep kids entertained – but the facilities surrounding the playground are what really makes it stand out.

Installed in July 2022, the Bowker Oval Playground features a variety of play equipment including plenty of climbing nets, a swing bridge, slides and swings to suit kids of varying ages and abilities. The slides are not too steep, and there’s one very twisty spiral slide to check out.

Complementing the main structure is a cute little shop and sorting table, suitable for imaginative play and perfect for toddlers. There is also a springy little rocker.

Bordering the playground is a tennis court and basketball/netball court for ball play. The other side of the playground is bordered by a magnificent community garden with a lot to see.

The North Brighton Community Garden is nominally open from 8am-5pm but this is flexible (it was locked on the day we visited). You can still see plenty from the outside – see if you can spot the fairy garden.

Beyond the community garden, alongside the oval, is a fantastic book nook bench with an extensive little free library. A lovely spot to sit and read a book or have a rest.

The large oval adjacent to the playground provides plenty of space to run about, and there’s a double-ended long jump track with sandpits to practice your jumping on – or use as a sandpit if there’s no one jumping! There are also cricket nets.

Facilities include a shade structure with a barbeque, and there is a toilet block across the oval. There is also a produce exchange stand next to a small garden bed by the picnic shelter.

There is little shade at the playground, however there are newly planted shade trees that should eventually provide some cover. Although the playground isn’t fully fenced, it is fenced near any roads and is set far back from the two large car parks  – one is accessed from Bowker Street to the north, the other from Brimble Street to the south.

Location:

Bowker Street, North Brighton, or Brimble Street off of Somers Street
