Game On: Boss Level: Adelaide Fringe 2023 Review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️   5 Stars for hilarious, video game-based mayhem

Review by Claire Davill

Matty Grey brings his loud, infectious energy for another installment of his Game On series, this year facing the boss level of game land! Will he survive? (If your kids are good shots with nerf guns, the answer is… probably not).

“It was even better than last year!” – according to our seven year old video game afficionado.

Riding a virtual roller coaster through an impressively created Minecraft course, Matty explores several games such as Duck Hunter, Super Mario Bros, Frogger and even Grand Theft Auto (suitably converted for a younger audience to “Granny Theft Auto”) with lots of audience participation. The parents are dragged in to the fun as well, but the kids are the ones that get to shoot, hit and throw obstacles at various video game characters.

Knowledge of video games is not necessary to enjoy the fun, but it definitely adds to the experience. Parents will love the detective noir-esque tails of pursuing Mario. Just remember not to shout out “he’s behind you!” as Matty recounts having defeated Mario, or he’ll loudly remind you that this is NOT a pantomime!

Matty’s energy means the show flies by quickly, and before you know it, you’ll be leaving the theatre with the stage littered with nerf bullets, foam logs, beach balls and inflatable crocodiles. It’s a show full of mildly controlled mayhem. Headphones are thoughtfully provided for any kids that might experience sensory overload, a wonderful consideration.
