Hahndorf Lavender Estate | Adelaide Hills | Review

Escape to the hills and surround yourself with vibrant purple fields and the delicate scent of lavender, at Hahndorf Lavender Estate.

Review by Jo Parkinson

First opening in 2023 and situated just five minutes from the township of Hahndorf, you will find the largest lavender farm in South Australia. With 50,000 lavender plants spread over three impressive fields, there is no missing the entrance to Hahndorf Lavender Estate. It is open to the public for ‘Pick your Own’ from mid December until mid January.

Pick Your Own Lavender

During December and January while the lavender fields are in full bloom, the farm is open for ‘Pick Own Lavender Bunch’ bookings. We enjoyed a visit recently and can highly recommend it as a great holiday activity for the whole family (including fur babies who are most welcome!) Pick Your Own bookings include a two-hour session to wander amongst the fields, soaking up the sights and scents and cutting your very own gorgeous bunch of lavender to take home.

There is plenty of time during the session to grab a snack and enjoy the scenery, and fortunately there is a food truck onsite selling a variety of lavender themed goodies, or you can order a picnic kit if you prefer.

Of course there are photo opportunities galore amongst the rows of lavender, so you can choose to get those insta-worthy shots yourself.  Visitors can also pre-purchase professional photography sessions via the website.

And if you are lucky, you might spot some alpacas and highland cattle over the fence as well (on the far side of field number two).

Food and Drink

After you’ve worked up an appetite picking your lavender, head over to the cute little food truck that sells a lovely range of lavender flavoured food and drink.

We tried the lavender iced chocolate, lavender ice cream, lavender brownie and cookie and lavender lemonade. They were all delicious, and the kids enjoyed tasting lavender products and learning that food can be flavoured with what they had just picked! There are several areas to sit and enjoy a nice snack while still admiring the fields of lavender.

If you aren’t too sure about lavender flavoured food, don’t worry, there is also regular food available such as pies, pasties and sausage rolls and regular hot drinks like tea and coffee. Non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks can also be purchased.

There were plenty of chairs and tables available either under cover or shaded by umbrellas.

Retail Shop

You can’t help but have a browse at the onsite shop before you leave. Selling anything and everything lavender, these luxurious products are made from 100% pure lavender oil, distilled by the owners. If you just can’t get enough of the glorious scent, you can’t go past the lavender essential oil and range of body lotions, shampoo and conditioner for sale. There are also teddies, wheat bags, jewellery and lollies which make perfect souvenirs or gifts.

Things to Consider

  • Booking ‘Pick Your Own’ online in advance is recommended
  • Entry cost is $20 adult, $15 senior, $5 child (5-12) children under 4 free (as at December 2025)
  • Plenty of onsite car parking available
  • Remember to slip, slop, slap if the weather is warm, as there is limited shade
  • There are quite a few bees on the plants, so if you are highly allergic to bees consider if this is safe for you
  • On the day we went there were lots of flies, but it was quite warm. When we visit next time, we might pick a cooler day in hopes that there would be less flies
  • Dogs are welcome to visit
  • Enclosed shoes are a good idea as the paths are very sandy and not sealed
  • If accessibility is something you need, let the staff know
  • There are toilets available onsite
  • Only pick what you intend to take home so as to leave plenty of lavender for others
  • Scissors and rubber bands are provided to cut and bunch your lavender, or you could BYO small basket
