How To Be a Rock Star | Fringe 2016 Review

How to be a rock star

Learn the ‘skillz’ to be a bonfire rock star at this high-energy show for rock-kids of all ages and their limo-driving entourage.

Go ready to dance, high five and cheer your way up the charts while you rock out along with your kids and their rock-star-Gurus, Tessa Walters and her side-kick DJ Roadie. Walters’ energy is contagious and un-intimidating. She engages and befriends her students immediately. From the smallest rocking toddlers to the nearly-too-cool pre-teens all of the kids graduated from Rock Star School with equal enthusiasm.

Music by DJ Roadie gives a cheeky wink to Mums and Dads, aka “the entourage”. Nostalgic smiles were seen throughout the adoring crowd proudly watching on as their young rock stars dance along to the likes of MC Hammer, Queen, Phil Collins and ACDC. Parents – try not to break out the big moves too early and steal the kids’ limelight!

Subtle undertones of positive body image and embracing individuality were unobtrusively themed throughout the show. Creating your ‘signature move’ based on your favourite body part was a wonderful inclusion. It was brilliant to see so many kids unable to choose just one body part and rock out with their whole bodies!

There was no pressure for kids to participate. The more reserved children happily joined “the entourage” taking in the spectacle of those more eager for the spotlight. It may help to take a ‘safety in numbers’ approach to this show if your child finds it easier to join in with backup from friends.

Put this on your family-fringe calendar if you have little rock-stars in the making who are keen to get up and rock!
