Westminster students to perform special tribute to fallen music icons

The world was left shocked following the sequential deaths of three of the world’s biggest music icons – David Bowie, Prince and George Michael. In August, students at Adelaide’s Westminster School will bring to life the sounds and songs of these fallen legends, when they perform a special tribute concert alongside some of Australia’s most talented multi- instrumentalists, vocalists and music composers.

Westminster School’s Music Night ‘Hunky Dory’ will be held at Westminster’s Michael Murray Centre for Performing Arts on Friday 18 August at 7.30pm.

Ross Irwin (Trumpet – well-known for his involvement with The Cat Empire and The Bamboos), Nick Mulder (Trombone), Adam Page (Saxophone, Loops), Julian Ferraretto (Violin) and Emma Pask (Vocalist) will accompany Westminster’s award-winning senior student concert band and big band, vocal jazz ensembles, string ensembles and choirs, to perform a number of classic hits from David Bowie, Prince and George Michael.

Ross, Nick, Adam, Julian and Emma will also be on-site as “Artists in Residence” at Westminster throughout the week leading up to the event, performing and collaborating with a wide range of students.

Music on the night will feature popular songs Changes, Kooks and Life on Mars (Bowie), Purple Rain (Prince) and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go (Wham/George Michael).

Arrangements by well-respected Adelaide music educators John McKenzie and Eric Bryce, who have both passed on and will be inducted into the SA Music Hall of Fame later this year, will also be included.

More than 800 people are expected to attend Westminster’s 2017 Music Night. It is considered one of the School’s biggest and most celebrated events of the year. Westminster School Acting Principal Grant Bock said this year’s Music Night – Hunky Dory – would be an outstanding and nostalgic night of music and performance.

“Westminster School is excited to host some of Australia’s most talented musicians for a special music tribute in honour of the late David Bowie, Prince and George Michael,” Mr Bock said.

“It’s a real coup for our students to be able to draw on the talents and expertise of Ross, Nick, Adam, Julian and Emma for what will be a week-long event of learning, collaborating and performing.

“We can’t wait to witness Westminster music students bring back some of the greatest hits from three icons who changed the world music scene forever.”

Westminster’s Music Night Hunky Dory will be held at the School’s Michael Murray Centre for Performing Arts on Friday 18 August at 7.30pm.
