IMMERSION – IMMERSE @ Light

An immersive experience like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

Narrated by Erik Thomson, Immersion is a 360 degree animated experience that will take you on a vivid journey through time to discover how water has shaped our world. From 50 million years ago when the land was covered in dense, wet rainforests, to the celestial significance of our local waterways to the Kaurna nation, IMMERSION reveals how those same molecules that arrived from the furthest reaches of our solar system still link us today.

IMMERSION explores the following key themes:

  • Creation
  • Indigenous History of Kaurna Nation
  • Nature
  • The Future

Play & Go had a preview viewing on November 3rd – take a look:

It’s a world-first, interactive, 360-degree animated show held in a breathtaking new, purpose-built venue, the ELLIPSE.  IMMERSE Event Director, Nathan Bazley said:

“IMMERSION will take audiences on a vivid 45-minute journey through time to discover how water has shaped our world. From 50 million years ago when this land was covered in dense rainforests, to the celestial significance of our local waterways to the Kaurna nation, IMMERSION reveals how those same molecules that arrived from the furthest reaches of our solar system still connectus today. “

“Visitors can interact with the show –throwing virtual paintballs over the city, controlling schools of fish with body movements, spotlighting animals in the dark Aussie bush or making plants come alive in an ancient rainforest.”

“This is a show that will amaze and engage both young and old.”

IMMERSION is being created with help from Oscar-nominated VFX (visual effects) artists.  The technology behind this new-age entertainment platform and event has never been showcased in Adelaide or Australia before.

Mr Dunstone said:

“For audiences, it will be like walking into an Imax theatre, except the screen wraps right around, surrounding you.”

Review of Immersion

Immersion is an interactive digital creation narrated by Adelaide’s Erik Thomson and created by a local team of South Australians with an extensive background in interactive multimedia. The concept encourages viewers to feel as though they are immersed in a different time and place, almost travellers in time watching evolution in progress while being active participants in parts of it.

The narrative explores the life cycle of water in our land through time from the very first molecules of water in space to the origins of the River Torrens and the Kaurna inhabitants who lived beside it and our oceans and our city.

Immersion takes place inside a small purpose-built space that wraps around the audience who can move around freely within the space. There are 4 highlighted circles that enable the audience to interact with the wrap-around screens. Each circle allows 1 person to stand inside and wave their arms up and down, directing schools of fish around the ocean and throwing paintballs at the City of Adelaide. This is quite fun for kids who will enjoy the interactive experience.

The wrap-around screen and realistic scenery provide a sense of being immersed in another time and place. I particularly enjoyed the rainforest scene and the movement of the light through the rainforest canopy. The other really enjoyable scene was watching the Australian bush and native animals come alive as dusk progressed to night.

The experience lasts for around 20 minutes so it is long enough to engage kids but not too long that they are likely to become restless. There are lots of changing scenes and scenery, animals to spot and at times, the feeling of being part of the space on the screen,

At the entrance and exit to the ellipse space, is ‘Flow State’, which is included in the ticket. Make sure you stop by and watch this digital display after Immersion.
