It can be hard finding safe, enjoyable activities for kids once they reach a certain age, especially in today’s world where there seems to be more and more things for parents to worry about. Blue Light SA was initiated in 1982 by the South Australian Police (SAPOL) Community Programs Support Branch to better promote Police and Youth relations. It provides young people with entertainment and activities in an environment free from alcohol, drugs, smoking and violence. Specially trained SAPOL Officers, Civilian SAPOL Employees and Community Volunteers supervise the entertainment and activities conducted by Blue Light SA. Without their support many programs would not operate.
Apart from discos, Blue Light SA runs an array of events such as camps, living skills programs and skate competitions as well as school and educational visits. They have also developed a Crime Reduction Initiative which aims primarily at identifying and addressing the needs of young people who are at risk. The philosophy of Blue Light SA is ‘to address youth issues by identifying the needs of young people, tailoring programs to meet individual needs and working in social partnerships with police and young people to break down barriers of communication’.
