Unley Oval Playground Upgrade

The City of Unley has tapped into the imaginations of children to help it design an upgraded playground at Unley Oval.

During recent community consultation with local residents, the City of Unley specifically sought suggestions from children in the area about what they would like to see incorporated into an improved playground, atop the northern mound at Unley Oval, known as the ‘Hilltop Playground’.

The Council received suggestions from 93 children – with an average age of 7 years old – and students from four local schools and kindergartens, including Saint Spyridon, Unley Primary School, Kirinari Community School and Unley Kindergarten, were involved in the project.

Unley Mayor Lachlan Clyne said the children’s contribution had enriched the consultation process and produced lots of exciting ideas for the playground upgrade.

“We’re aiming to provide an attractive, safe and fun new space aimed at 5 to 12 year olds so it was very important to us that we had input from the children who will be using the playground,” Mr Clyne said.

“Kids are incredibly imaginative and offer different perspectives to adults, which is invaluable for projects like this. We were delighted by the ideas they came up with and hope we can integrate elements of them into the design.”

The most popular ideas included an aeroplane, haunted house, castle, pirate ship, nature play and incorporating animal designs such as elephants, spiders, cats and unicorns.

Data was collected from the participating children through recorded interviews and drawings. The Council also provided paper, crayons, and a suggestion box at the playground asking children to draw what they would like to see in a new playground.

Other suggestions from the wider community consultation include support for keeping the current maritime and pirate ship theme, more seating and shade and features such as climbing, swinging, imaginary play and natural vegetation.

The budget for the new playground is $100,000 and designs will be drawn up from now until February. Further consultation will be undertaken about the designs before construction, which is expected to start in mid-2017.
