Lunch on the Lawns at Government House in Adelaide

Her Excellency the Governor is opening the family friendly grounds of Government House for the public to enjoy their lunch picnic-style on the lawns.

Her Excellency and Mr Bunten invite the public to go along to the Government House gardens, take a picnic lunch, spread out a rug or unfold a camping chair and enjoy the surroundings, while listening to a community band or orchestra.

The free events will be held on the first Friday of the month from 12 noon to 2pm starting on Friday 1 September 2023.

Just go through the main gates on North Terrace and choose your picnic spot. Children can enjoy the music while running around the extensive lawns, and exploring the gardens.

Garden Tours:

On the same dates, free garden tours of the Government House grounds, hosted by the Friends of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide will run from 10.45am to 11.45am.

As part of the tours, adults will enjoy learning about how the Government House garden has developed over time. Adults and children alike can get up close to the garden’s oldest trees, as well as statues and sculptures. They can touch plants in the sensory garden, visit the Governor’s Rose Garden, which has a dedicated rose for each Governor in the history of the state, and investigate what’s currently in season in the vegetable gardens.

Registrations are required for these guided tours by phoning 8203 9800.
