National Reconciliation Week 2019

Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage

NRW is celebrated every year between the 27th of May and the 3rd of June. These two dates commemorate two very significant events in Australia’s history: the 1967 Referendum, which gave the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census; and the Mabo Decision, which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land, paved the way for Native Title, and overturned Terra Nullius.

NRW is a time where Australians come together to join the reconciliation effort. It’s a time where we learn about our shared stories and cultures and move forward towards a brighter and more equal future for all Australians.

NRW 2019 Campaign

This year’s theme is “Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage”

At the heart of reconciliation is the relationship between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To foster positive race relations, our relationship must be grounded in a foundation of truth.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have long called for a comprehensive process of truth-telling about Australia’s colonial history. Our nation’s past is reflected in the present, and will continue to play out in future unless we heal historical wounds.

Today, 80 per cent of Australians believe it is important to undertake formal truth telling processes, according to the 2018 Australian Reconciliation Barometer. Australians are ready to come to terms with our history as a crucial step towards a unified future, in which we understand, value and respect each other.

There will be many events held across the country during Reconciliation Week. Become involved by attending an event in your region.
