Payneham Tavern offers a family friendly dining experience with an excellent kids’ menu, a fully fenced playground and plenty of space to relax and enjoy a meal.
Review by Claire Davill
Payneham Tavern has re-opened following extensive renovations in 2024 and now provides a fantastic dining option for families. The big drawcard is the new playground. It’s undercover, fully fenced, and right next to the tables in the beer garden area. There’s plenty here to keep the kids occupied, including a tube slide, regular slide, tunnels and activity boards. The playground is designed for children aged 3-10 years.
The dedicated kid’s menu is a great food option. All meals are $15 and include a drink and an ice cream. There’s all the pub favourites to choose from, including fish and chips, nuggets, pasta, cheeseburgers and pizza. Meals come with chips and a very decent salad – so the kids will still get some veggies!
Other bigger meal options include pub favourites such as salt and pepper squid, wood fired pizzas and huge schnitzels that are cooked to perfection.
There is also plenty of smaller, share options such as wedges, cheesy garlic bread and crumbed haloumi, plus vegetarian and vegan options as well as low gluten and low dairy options on the menu.
Sticky toffee pudding, panna cotta and chocolate pudding were on the menu for dessert.
The indoor bistro area is large and open, however the beer garden is a better option for families. It’s a mostly enclosed verandah with large tables, ceiling fans and ceiling heaters, so it is suitable for all weather conditions.
You have the option at the Payneham Tavern of ordering at the bar, or via an app from your table. This means you don’t need to leave your table when supervising children.
There are plenty of high chairs available and a large unisex toilet suitable for families with young children. The change table is thoughtfully placed in the vestibule before the bathrooms, making baby changing much more pleasant.
The tavern has regular events throughout the week, including free children’s entertainment from 12pm – 3pm on Sundays.
