Timeless children’s entertainer still has the kids dancing in the aisles

Review by Sharon Harrington

When I think of classic children’s songs, I think of tiny little people singing “Wash your face in orange juice, clean your teeth with bubblegum” with gleeful abandon. This made deciding on a children’s Fringe show a no brainer. I must also secretly admit to wanting to share some quintessential 1980/90’s nostalgia with my own little people.

Peter Combe has been a beloved children’s performer for 40 years now and his show today was still an absolute delight to watch. His presence on stage is warm and charming and has the familiar feeling of a favourite uncle strumming his guitar, singing songs and making silly jokes around the campfire. He is silly and joyful and the kids love him, as do the parents who saw him the first time around 30 (ahem) odd years ago.

The song line up had some mellow sing-a-longs, along with big ticket fan favourites such as Toffee Apple, Newspaper Mama, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Quirky Berserky (the Turkey from Turkey) and of course Wash Your Face With Orange Juice (Mr Clicketty Cane). It was so wonderful to see the kids get up and dance in the aisles in this strange Covid conscious era.

Children from local performing arts group, Theatre Bugs, also performed on stage adding talented, colourful choreography and backing vocals to the proceedings.

When Peter Combe said his farewells, my littlest one declared “That was the best thing ever!”. I thought it was pretty good too.

Peter Combe is performing in the gorgeous, vintage Speigletent in the Garden of Unearthly Delights until next Sunday. Check him out!
