Pull Pop Push | State Library | Review

Pull Pop Push at the State Library – a free, immersive, interactive exploration of the history of pop-up books.
Review by Claire Davill
Pull Pop Push explores the art of moveable books, such as pop-ups, wheels, expanding tunnels, lift-the-flap, and even sound books. The space is warm and inviting, and includes several large sized displays so kids can insert themselves right into a moveable book.

There are larger-than-life moveable displays, demonstrations of the mechanisms of moveable books, and interactive screens to explore the sounds that old sound books made.

There’s a cozy reading nook with comfy chairs and pillows, and a large shelf of pop-up books to read.

There are also craft opportunities, with two tables inviting kids to create their own pop-up card or pop-up bookmark.

Pull Pop Push is free to enter, and is located in the Spence Wing of the ground floor of the State Library (just to the left of the main entrance).
The exhibition runs until January 2027, and is accessible during State Library opening hours, and also in the evenings during Illuminate Adelaide (evening openings until 19 July 2026).

What we like about Pull Pop Push:
- It’s FREE to enter
- It’s immersive and interactive
- It’s indoors, making it a great rainy day activity
- The location on North Terrace makes it easily accessible by public transport, and great to combine with a visit to the rest of the library, SA Museum, Art Gallerof SA, and more.

Things to consider:
- While most of the displays are interactive, the large Noah’s Ark display is not, and you’ll need to keep kids from touching or climbing this enticing display.
- Take care with the pop-up books so everyone can enjoy them.
- The exhibition runs until 24 January 2027
Coffee and food options nearby:
- The State Library onsite cafe is open Monday to Saturday
