Rebel | Adelaide Fringe Review 2019

If you’ve got time to squeeze in one more Fringe show this festival, make it ‘Rebel’
★★★★★ 5 Stars

“I want to tart rock up. I don’t want to climb out of my fantasies in order to go up on stage—I want to take them on stage with me.”

Inspired by these words famously spoken by the  great David Bowie, ‘Rebel’ brings all of the grace, glamour and fantasy onto the stage of the Wonderland Spiegletent in Gluttony.

Stewart Reeve is an evocative tribute to David Bowie with an incredible stage presence that matches the glam rock figure that he cuts. Reeves is a talent that could single handedly captivate an audience, but when accompanied by an equally glam live band and a fantastical whimsy of world class circus acts, festival-goers are treated to a high-sensory and emotive feast.

For Bowie fans (let’s be honest who isn’t?) the music will have you dancing in your seats, singing along and wishing you wore more sequins. Rebel nails the delicate balance of embodying without imitating. Their tribute is about bringing the idea and glam rock culture of Bowie to the stage.

Rebel needs to be breathed in.  It is more than the sum of the intoxicating music and fantastical circus. It is an intimate experience that has captured the essence of what Bowie meant when he uttered those words “I want to tart rock up”

Rebel is showing until Sunday 17 March 2019 in the Wonderland Spiegeltent at Gluttony.
