Savour top-quality food and stunning views at this Italian-inspired café, set within a scenic, historic estate. Kids welcome!
Review by Carla Caruso
Have you ever heard of a panuzzo?
Neither had I, despite my Italian ancestry. But it was all my family could talk about after our visit to the new café at Carrick Hill, Rozelle’s.
For the unacquainted, a panuzzo has been described as the “love child of a pizza and a sandwich”.
Rozelle’s breakfast panuzzo is a mouthwatering medley of bacon, avocado, provolone, soft egg, and capsicum, all wrapped in warm, pizza-style bread. Baked on-site in a wood-fired oven, the bread comes out perfectly puffed and lightly crisp.
There was plenty more to rave about at Rozelle’s too: the sweeping views of the coast and city skyline, the Amalfi-like atmosphere with its striped umbrellas, and the outstanding food and drinks across the menu.
Rozelle’s sits within the grounds of the historic Carrick Hill estate, once home to Sir Edward ‘Bill’ Hayward and his wife, Ursula—prominent figures in Adelaide’s social and cultural life.
The estate is known for its English manor-style architecture and now operates as a heritage destination, offering access to preserved interiors, formal gardens, and curated exhibitions.
Rozelle’s Café is a modern addition to the estate, adjoining The Pavilion function space. Their combined development was completed in 2024 as part of a $7 million project funded by federal and state governments, along with the Carrick Hill Development Foundation.
Both venues are now operated by the Favaro Group, the team behind local institutions Chianti and Bar Torino on Hutt Street.
I visited Rozelle’s on a drizzly autumn day with my family of four, and the weather didn’t dampen the experience—in fact, it added to the charm. It felt wonderfully cosy watching the rain fall as the pizza-maker worked his magic, all while we enjoyed the view. We weren’t the only ones in on the secret; plenty of others were there too, soaking up the warm, welcoming ambiance.
For brunch, I chose the eggs alla Norma—think eggs in purgatory—with baked eggs nestled in a rich, eggplant-laden tomato sauce and topped with salted ricotta. (I can never resist anything with eggplant.) It arrived piping hot from the wood-fired oven, so you’ll want to give it a moment to cool before diving in and mopping up the yolk and sauce with the accompanying sourdough.
The kids, of course, went for the aforementioned, to-die-for breakfast panuzzi. My husband opted for a brunch classic: eggs Benedict with perfectly poached eggs and prosciutto on a toasted English muffin. (Worth noting—it’s served without a side salad.)
We rounded out the meal with top-notch coffees, rich hot chocolates, and refreshing green juices made with celery, apple, spinach, and more.
Other tempting brunch options included butter bean hummus, prosciutto-wrapped rockmelon, arancini, and creamy burrata. On the sweeter side, there were scones with clotted cream and jam—a nod to the estate’s British charm—alongside lamingtons, ricotta-filled sfogliatelle, and zesty limoncello cannoli.
From 11.30am, the full menu kicks in, with Roman-style pizzas taking centre stage.
After indulging, we took a leisurely stroll around the estate’s grounds to walk off our feast. It’s hard to believe a place like this is just minutes from the CBD!
