Science Alive! 2015 | Review

Science Alive! is one of Australia’s premier science and technology expos. We also attended in 2012, the last time when the Questacon Science Circus were present at this event. They were fantastic! It’s going to be fabulous having them back again – their truck of science goodies and presenters from the National Science & Technology Centre of Canberra, is great for all the kids to experience (young and old)!

Play & Go Review | Saturday 8 August 2015

Science Alive! is definitely getting bigger each year. This year the most noticeable new attractions are all the inflatables – the Mega brain, the Mega Body and the huge Bio-Bounce bouncy castle.

There’s not just smoke ring makers, this year they’ve got 2 smoke cannons. There’s even more hands-on fun for kids – every table has some sort of science experiment, instruments or activity for children to explore.

You know how usually when you go to an exhibition show you may have to tell your kids several times not to touch things? Well, this is not that kind of show. They CAN touch everything to their hearts content – in fact, they are encouraged to have a go at everything!! That’s why it’s such an amazing event for kids. Thanks to the visiting Questacon Science Circus truck there’s even more things to experiment with and more shows to watch.

There are plenty of freebies to look out for. One of our favourites is slime. Make sure you pick up a cup of this (near the Mega Brain).

PLAY & GO TIPS

  • Get there early – there’s so much to do and shows to watch, you can easily spend all day there. We were there for 4 hours and could easily have spent more time. Also, it’s quieter in the mornings generally so less line-ups.
  • Book your tickets online before you go – there was a line-up for tickets. You can show your online ticket booking on your phone if you don’t want to print your ticket.
  • There are two food areas. There’s the usual Showgrounds cafe in one pavilion, while the other pavilion has Pretzel Mania, Wendy’s and a Coffee/hot chips etc stand. If you’re after healthy food options, you may be best to bring your own food, which is also a good idea if you want to save some money. There are plenty of table and seats to sit and eat.
  • For those with little ones, this year there’s a little play area for 6 yrs and under which is great for toddlers and babies.
  • Yes, there are line-ups, especially at the big attractions that grab kids’ attention eg the huge Bio Bounce bouncy castle, the Mega Body and the Rock Climbing Wall. The Mega Body line moves pretty quickly but the other two – they looked to be ridiculously long every time we looked today and as each turn takes a while, the line moves fairly slowly. You may have to bribe the kids with something else to persuade them to miss these unless you don’t mind waiting in line for quite a while. If you are in a group, some Adults could take turns lining up while another explores other things with the kids.
