SciWorld Spectacular Pop Up Science Centre – Review

The Ridley Centre at the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds was the ideal venue for the SciWorld Spectacular Pop Up Science Centre. As soon as we walked in the door, the kids were off exploring the scientific stations. With over 60 hands-on interactive exhibits from the Questacon “Fascinating Science” and “Science on the Move” collections, there were lots of buttons to press, glass to look through, iron filings to play with and concepts to wonder about.

With ticket numbers capped for this event, the space was not overwhelmed by large numbers of people, so there was plenty of room for kids to get really hands-on at each station. The kids had enough time to spend “playing science” at each station, and to read the accompanying scientific explanation. Some of the more memorable stations examined the concept of colour, patterns in space, sound waves, magnetism and electricity.

There were two stardomes available for attendees. Each stardome was entered by crawling through a tunnel to reach the inflatable dome which is completely dark inside apart from the twinkling stars on the roof and walls. Our stardome host guided us through the constellations, explaining the background to some of the names of the constellations and where we might locate them in our night sky.

There were a number of workshops, mostly suited to older children – robotics, palaeontology, archeology and rocket science and also interactive shows. We were pleasantly surprised to see Animals Anonymous amongst the line – up of shows on offer. The presenter was engaging, funny and allowed the children to touch and look closely at the animals so that they could really appreciate them and learn about how they exist in the wild.bilby

The science show was a fun and interesting demonstration of physics and chemistry. Kids were glued to the presenter who asked questions of the audience, invited volunteers and showed just how interesting and fun science can be while producing chemical reactions, making coloured slime and even creating a spectacular fireball!

At $15 for a child’s ticket with accompanying adults entering at no charge, the pop up science centre provided a great three hours of non-stop learning and fun.
