Semaphore Steam Train Rides | October – April

Semaphore Steam Train – fun family friendly train ride from Semaphore to Fort Glanville and back.

The Semaphore to Fort Glanville Tourist Railway is an enjoyable 30 minute, four kilometre return journey travelling along the picturesque sand dunes in open carriages, pulled along behind a steam engine.  Young children will especially love the adventure of a train ride and waving from the open carriages.

The Semaphore Steam Train returns from 28 September 2024, just in time for the October school holidays.

Operated by the National Railway Museum, the 2km long 457 mm gauge railway from Semaphore to Fort Glanville departs from the foot of the Semaphore jetty at the end of the popular Semaphore Road cafe strip.  The train then runs parallel along the Esplanade and the sand dunes of one of Adelaide’s most popular swimming beaches, before passing through the dunes near historic Fort Glanville at Point Malcolm.

The railway operates:

  • Every Sunday & Public Holiday from October to April (inclusive)
  • Daily during school holidays in October and April, except Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Daily from 26 December to the end of January school holidays
  • Steam trains will depart between 11am and 4pm, roughly every hour or at frequencies varied according to demand.

This fantastic train ride is very popular with children of all ages, along with parents, grand-parents and carers.
