Suzie Wong’s Room

The Brief
I’ve been wanting to bring the kids and other half to Suzie Wong’s Room since I last visited a year ago with a friend. I’ve literally been craving the food and atmosphere for that long. Thankfully last night was finally time for a revisit, and this time I brought along the whole family (even the ever disappearing husband).
Suzie Wong’s is well located for everyone and anyone – those wanting a bite to eat before a show at the Entertainment Centre; those wanting a lovely meal before catching one of the free trams into the city; and those simply wanting to soak up the wonderful vibe while feasting to their hearts content (e.g. Us).
Little People Friendly
After last nights tea I have to say that Suzie Wong’s was Little People Friendly for us, and we managed to have a memorable family dinner (and not for the wrong reasons). I admit I was a little worried as my littlest man has been a little trying this week, but thankfully after a little settling in chat, and a $3 packet of dinosaurs from Kmart we had a blissful hour and a half as a family.
From the moment my little ones walked in their senses were overwhelmed. My little ones were particularly fond of the Japanese Maneki-neko (Beckoning Fortune Cat), which welcomes all visitors to Suzie’s.
“Maneki-neko” – I think I’m going to have to get a baby one for my house.
The lighting is quite moody, dark, colourful and creates a wonderful atmosphere (again my kids thought it was all very fun). Add to this the wonderful live music (which aims to be most nights, and if not, the music is always well picked) and this is simply a unique dining experience that we simply loved.
There are two levels to Suzie’s and we chose to be downstairs as my youngest is quite the adventurer. This ended up being a great choice for us because having dinner underground was an added adventure for the kids (and us).
Suzie Wong’s has two dinner sitting times that suit families (6-7:30pm and 7:30-8:45pm). Due to liquor licensing children are not allowed to be on premises after 9pm.

The Food
Suzie Wong’s food is all that it claims – “At Suzie Wong’s Room you’ll be eating simple home made European style food”. What they don’t mention is how the food instantly takes you back to your childhood memories of eating your Nanna, Nonna’s or Grandma’s amazing cooking (for us of European background of course). For those who haven’t been exposed to cuisine of this nature then the food will simply make you feel content and happy.
We chose to have the Antipasti Plate for 2, with a main to share, “Cabbage Rolls”, and two bowls of the most amazing mash (its honestly the best I’ve eaten – even better than my brother-in-law’s which was my previous favourite).
Suzie Wong’s has a kids menu as well, but my children decided they wanted mashed potatoes and antipasti. Also if you choose the 6pm sitting then you get a free kids meal for each main you purchase.
Despite our best efforts we couldn’t finish our meals (trust me we tried really hard). Which was a little bit disappointing for me as I’ve heard great things about the sweet things here (at least it gives me another excuse to come again).
Special mention goes to the Antipasti plate. It was simply divine, and I believe it’s one of the best I’ve had in Adelaide.
The Drinks
Suzie Wong’s has a great drinks menu with something to suit all tastes. I had the house sparkling (which was quite lovely), and my husband supported the local The Hills Cider Company. The kids simply had water this visit, but a selection of non alcoholic drinks are available of course to suit anyone.
Other
The service was wonderful, the staff were lovely, and the food came out at good intervals without making you feel rushed.
The prices seemed very good for the size and taste. Our total bill came to just under $85 and considering the wonderful food, drink, atmosphere, service and music we enjoyed this was a small price to pay.
By the end of our visit to Suzie Wong’s we made up our minds to hold our next family birthday party here. We can’t wait for our next visit.
