TANYA MONRO 1

The 2014 Science Inspiration

Set your lasers to ‘inspire’ with Professor Tanya Monro

Prof Tanya Monro, is a literal ‘bright spark’ of Australian science and will inspire students and adults alike as she talks about her journey from childhood into the world of photonics research on Wednesday 17 September 2014.

Prof Monro is best known for her ground-breaking research into photonics, the science of light, earning her numerous accolades both in Australia and overseas. In this flagship RiAus event, Tanya will talk directly to students all over the country in the morning, followed by an evening session open to all. Both events will be broadcast live online.

“I know the importance of showing students how exciting and creative science really can be”, Tanya said. “My high school physics teacher, Mr McCallum, did that for me. If I hadn’t met him, I probably would have become a musician!”

Prof Monro will start by describing simple photonics principles, and she will highlight how different science disciplines can be brought together to solve problems.

“I work with physicists to design new lasers and fibre optics, but I also work with chemists, biologists and engineers to actually use these discoveries in medicine, in sensing and in industry”, she said. “A career in science can take you anywhere, and that’s what I want to get across to those hearing my presentation”.

Audiences will have the chance to get to know the real person behind the science figurehead, and find out what led up to Tanya’s incredible career success, in a ‘This is Your Life’ style segment. “A turning point was when I realised how the equations and principles I was learning in my maths class could be applied to the real world. It was really quite beautiful”, she said.

The Science Inspiration event will also include a brief cello performance by Tanya, showcasing one of her passions outside of science: music.
“Learning music helped to train my brain from a young age, which makes me a better scientist now”, said Tanya.
