The Pulse – Gravity & Other Myths
Incredible acrobatics from dizzying heights, accompanied by a soulful choir, with stunts and songs that will leave you breathless.
The Adelaide-based physical theatre company Gravity & Other Myths are no stranger to Mad March in Adelaide and they have returned with their show The Pulse as part of the Adelaide Festival in 2021. It was thrilling to see almost sixty people performing on stage together, with thirty amazing acrobats in addition to almost thirty talented singers from Aurora, Young Adelaide Voices, forming the choir .
Gravity & Other Myths have had shows in the Fringe in previous years, including A Simple Space which ran in 2019 & 2020. They brought the same energy to The Pulse, but amped it up with a larger troupe of acrobats, even more incredible stunts and the addition of the choir, whose songs created serious and theatrical moments throughout the performance.
Some of the stunts will leave you breathless, as the acrobats leap from dizzying heights, form human towers three people high, and create a staircase with their bodies. The use of space on the stage is incredible, and the timing of the tricks and use of lighting creates some beautiful and daring moments.
The Aurora choir sets the tone for the stunts, building the tension to emphasise the skilled risks the acrobats take. The conductor and lead soloist changes the tone of the performance entirely in her solo, matching her singing to the movement of the acrobats, creating a haunting effect.
In addition to plenty of drama and theatrics there are some fun and light moments from the acrobats and the choir, which breaks up the performance and showcases the cheekiness of the talent.
The Pulse is on as part of the Adelaide Festival in the recently renovated Her Majesty’s Theatre. Masks are required to be worn in the theatre and throughout the performance. You can bring your own mask or pick one up on your way in from the ushers.
