Velvet Rewired: Adelaide Fringe 2023 Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️   5 Stars for Velvet Rewired, a glamorous sequinned union of music, song, dance and breathtaking circus acts.

If you’re only going to see one show this Fringe then this is the WOW show that’s worth seeing. The audience is transported to a disco wonderland, Studio 54 style, and from the minute the DJ Joe Accaria (also the Musical Director) starts the beats, the good times vibe doesn’t stop.

Music royalty Queen of Pop, Marcia Hines, effortlessly leads a hugely talented cast. This is an all singing, all dancing, glittering extravaganza – there’s no chit chat or crude jokes – totally suitable for all ages.

The soundtrack for Velvet Rewired features epic dance floor anthems you can’t help singing along to like, ‘If You Could Read My Mind’, ‘Born To Be Alive’, ‘Shake Your Groove Thing’, ‘Ain’t Nobody’, ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’, and ‘Turn The Beat Around’.

Accompanying Marcia Hines’ powerhouse performance with her velvet smooth voice is the slick vocal talent of Tom Sharah, along with hard working energetic Jacinta Gulisano and Sasha Lee Saunders, who not only do polished back up singing throughout, but dance non-stop and feature in their own piece as well.

Mark Fullout ‘Royale’ reminds us to ‘dance like no one is watching’.

The aerial artists are truly mesmerising. No safety harness and even no hands at times – I wonder how many times growing up Harley Timmerman was told to “get down from up there – that’s dangerous!”

When Beau Sargent performs a captivating aerial performance with fluid long lines as if dancing in the air, he lands with his toes touching the stage as soft as a feather. It is not surprising to find out later that his resume includes dancing with the Australian Ballet Company.

For exhilaration junkies, sit close to the stage and try not to wince when dynamic roller skating duo Sven and Jan hurl around at top speed with death defying acrobatics on a stage that seems bafflingly small for purpose. It has to be seen to be believed what these talented humans are capable of – it’s heart pumping and breathtaking to watch (especially as the Mum in me is at the edge of my seat anxious for everyone’s safety).

The formula for Velvet Rewired is not new but the polished delivery, expertly created by Director Craig Illot makes it a cut above many and you can see why the previous Velvet sold out night after night. This will do exactly the same. Dust off the sequins, get ready to boogie and make sure you don’t miss out on what everyone will be talking about this Fringe.

Velvet Rewired is performing at The Moa in Gluttony – Rymill Park/Murlawirrapurka, Cnr East Tce & Rundle Rd, Adelaide.
