Walk of Awareness
The annual Walk of Awareness commemorates the Stolen Generations. This year it will be held on Friday 12 February.
The walk brings the whole community together in Port Adelaide to remember the Apology to Australia’s Indigenous peoples. On the 13 February 2008, The Commonwealth parliament passed a motion that formally apologised to the Stolen Generations. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd tabled the motion, apologising to Indigenous Australians “for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss”.
The community will walk together through Port Adelaide on the anniversary of this day to commemorate the apology, remember the past and look forward to a brighter future.
It will be held from 11:15am starting on the northern side of the Birkenhead Bridge departing at 11:30am. The group will walk across to the southern side towards Hart’s Mill where a Smoking Ceremony, Kaurna Welcome to Country, storytelling and free community lunch will take place.
